Inner Strength Meditations
The velvety night sky
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Using the image of a vast night sky, this meditation helps you experience spaciousness and calm. Thoughts are noticed like stars passing through awareness, without needing to follow them. A grounding practice for perspective, ease, and mental clarity.
Why this helps? Open awareness helps you gain perspective without being overwhelmed by thoughts.
Posture And Beginning Bell
Visualizing A Safe Night Landscape
SPEAKER_00Welcome to Inner Strength Meditations. For a little calm and care. We got you. We're going to practice open awareness. Bring yourself into a comfortable seated posture, your legs uncrossed, your feet flat on the floor. Let gravity hold you in your chair and let your spine rise up easy and tall. When you hear the bell, we can begin. You can use the images that I'm sharing, or you can replace them with images that illustrate the same perspective as you choose. So imagine a beautiful place outside where you're completely safe and happy.
SPEAKER_01You're sitting somewhere outside, and it's nighttime.
Noticing Stars And Motion In Sky
SPEAKER_00You're away from the city, so there are millions of stars in the sky. You might be on the beach, or you might be in the mountains, or you might be in a big meadow on a hilltop by a stream. Choose that place where you feel completely at home and at ease. And imagine that you lie down on your back. Summertime, the weather's perfect, temperature's not too warm, not too cold, and you're looking up at the night sky. And at first, you just start noticing the millions and billions of stars. Some are slightly blue, some are slightly golden, some are slightly red. The light that is coming to us is from millions and billions of light years away. Some of the stars you see might be supernovas. Maybe you notice a meteor shooting across the sky.
SPEAKER_01Or a satellite making its way around the earth.
Shifting Attention To The Space
Resting In Open Awareness
SPEAKER_00Keep paying attention to all those pinpricks of light. All those stars and planets and meteors filling the vast field of space. So now take your attention off those millions of stars, the little pinpricks of light, and shift them to the space between them. That velvety night sky that seems to extend in all directions. And now just keep your attention on the space, not the objects. Allowing your attention just to rest on that velvet night sky, extending infinitely in all directions. Move your attention back to that space.
SPEAKER_01Be easy and gentle.
SPEAKER_00And when you hear the bell, we'll finish. Pretty awesome.
